• Management at London Buses has asked union leaders representing 19,000 bus workers to meet for talks at the end of this week in a bid to stop a repeat of last Monday's 24-hour stoppage.
LB's 7.1% offer could well be improved, but employees will want something substantial in the wake of news that inflation has reached 8% and pressure is increasing for another hike in mortgage rates.
"At the very least any settlement must cover the inflation rate," says a TGWU official.
