• Many former passengers have stopped using buses in the West Midlands since deregulation, according a Passenger Transport Authority survey, which found that services are carrying 50 million fewer passengers annually — a drop of 10% since 1986.
"Deregulation has not brought about the same level of service that existed prior to 1986 and passengers have voted with their feet and found other ways to travel," says PTA chairman Phil Bateman.
The survey indicates that bus mileage has dropped 8% since deregulation, and also that West Midland Travel's share of that shrinking market is declining.
El Bus fares in West Midlands could rise by 8p this summer, says West Midlands Travel's financial director Don Colston.
