wheel guidebook

THE FREIGHT Transport Association is about to publish a "good housekeeping" guide on the maintenance of wheels and wheel fastenings. Speaking at the Institute of toac.1 Transport Engineers' :onference last week, FTA nigineering manager Ron icier said Lit many of the /chicle manufacturers' recomnendations on wheels were 'simply not practical'.

As an example, he pointed o the fact that some recomnended that wheel nuts hould be re-tightened to a pccified torque 50km after a vheel has been changed. The FTA guide describes 'in basic language' the .arious types of wheel fixing. : gives only two torque xommendations: 400 lbft for mica! fixings and 500 lbft his figure has not yet been nalised) for spigot mounted iheels, whereas manufacturer rheelnut torque recomtendations vary.

Mr Rider said that these NO mean figures had been aablished after a two-year zld trial with two major 2ets. Both had experienced wer wheel fixing failures. He was concerned that mac vehicle manufacturers id that if the tightening tories on wheels with conical Kings were taken above their • commended figure, the heel would begin to distort. "The correct torque should ke a stud to 70-80 per cent its yield strength," said Mr ider. "If the wheel is not rong enough to accept this, ien it should he made :onger." He stressed that the ETA as not working against the TE and would continue to pport the IRTE research.
