Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

In reply to the letter "Hgv v psv driving" (CM May 11) I have been an hgv driving instructor in the army, arid an hgv driver for 15 years. When hgv licences were enforced I had been a bus driver for a year, which means I am unable to obtain one of these licences. Basically speaking there is no difference between driving a rigid hgv and a bus. And as for the securing of loads on an hgv vehicle, surely this is a thing you learn as you go along. After all, you are not tested on a loaded vehicle, and I have not seen a sand and ballast lorry roped and sheeted.

As for a bus driver being well paid, he may not be on overtime until two or three hours after his shift finishes. That means he is not paid for those two or three hours. I often wonder how many hgv licenceholders really were driving in that period between February 1969-70, or getting haulage firms to sign their exemption forms, because there are no log sheets to prove they were driving during that period.

B. WARREN. Galleywood, Essex.
