Mr W. A. Dobson (Wm Dobson (Edinburgh) Ltd) expects to achieve a payload of 20.35 tons at 30.5 tons gcw using a lightweight tractive unit fitted with the Gardner 6LXB engine which produces 180 bhp net installed (BSAU 141a) and coupled to a [ightweight trailer. With the introduction of the minimum 6 bhp per ton power to weight ratio, the 6LXB could no longer be used for operation at 32 tons gew. But because he is a confirmed Gardner engine user and he did not wish to pay the extra £1000 for the 8LXB to operate at 32 tons gcw, Mr Dobson set about specifying a lightweight artic that could be fitted with the 6LXB and carry a comparable payload to his present 32tonners. Consultation with vehicle manufacturers established that even with a lightweight tractive unit fitted with the 6LXB and coupled to a typical 4011 platform semitrailer a 20-ton payload would be just possible. So Mr Dobson approached Dyson Trailers with a view to reducing trailer weight. The result was a 40ft platform semitrailer with a high-tensile steel mainframe which reduced weight by 5cwt. Total unladen weight including twistlocks, standard multileaf running gear and twin-tubeless tyres is 4 tons 13cwt.

Coupled to existing 6LXB engined tractive units a payload of 20 tons can be carried at 30.5-ton gem and 21.5 tons at 32-ton gcw.
