• The Department of the Environment has announced that it is prepared to make grants of up to 50 per cent available to bus companies for the installation of twoway radios. The scheme, which will cost around £.10,000, is designed to speed up public transport and relieve congestion.
A spokesman for the DoE said that "it would also help to combat hooliganism and vandalism on buses". Many large cities already have a limited number of buses which operate on vandal-prone routes, fitted with two-way radio control.
This latest announcement is an extension of the scheme which gives bus operators the right to claim a grant if two-way radios are installed on new vehicles at the time of purchase. The extension means that grants can be made for installations in vehicles which are already in service.
The extension of the infrastructure grant scheme also includes grants to enable operators to replace obsolete fare collection equipment on o-m-o buses.
