Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FARES on •cityservices having been increased last October,. Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., •Ltd., has now successfully' applied for higher charges on country services. In•addition, the Western Licensing. Authority has granted increased charges on Bath city routes, as well as on the 260 country services affected. Bristol. Tramways country services cover an area extending from Swindon and Oxford in the east, to Hereford in the north, and Bridgwater and Yeovil in the south.

Putting the case for the concern, Mr. T. D. Corpe stressed that it was not a "

blanket" application which was being made. Every fare had been closely examined and in a number of cases no increase was asked for. In particular there had been an effort to retain the Id. fare stage. Bath Corporation, Long Ashton Rural District Council and the Gloster Aircraft Co., Ltd.. were objectors:

The modified rates will come into effect on June 1, it is believed, and are as follows:—Single tickets, Id.-5d., up by id.; singles from 6d. to be increased by ld.; return tickets up to lid, up by Id.. thereafter by 2d. and 3d.

For the second time. South Shields Corporation has been directed by the Northern Licensing Authority to re-draft its application for fares variations. Applying last week for an increase of id. on the minimum fare of lid. and on the workmen's 2id. return, the corporation was recommended to retain tie lid. minimum and to abolish all concessionary rates.

£7,000 Deficit This year, it has been estimated, the undertaking would incur a deficit of £7,000, and next year this would become £21,000. Previously, the corporation had sought to redress the unfavourable balance of revenue over working costs by increasing fares over the week-end. This, too, was refused.

Bury Town Council has decided to apply for variations in the fares structure of the municipal undertaking. A minimum rate of lid. is suggested, covering a 1.1-mile stage instead of the 1-mile stage applying to the present Id. ticket. On existing rates a deficit of £24,874 is expected this year.

New applications for fares variations have been made to the Yorkshire Licensing Authority by a number• of operators in the area. Fares on services operated by Yorkshire Traction Co., Ltd., went up on May 12, and West Riding Automobile Services, Ltd., was earlier granted similar modifications.

Now, East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., Hull, has asked for new charges on 84 services, the first in the 25 years' history of the ccrneern.

Keighley-West Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., has applied for new charges on 24 routes, and the proposals of Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co., Ltd., and Hull Corporation—affecting 86 and 33 routes respectively—have _been published. They provide for id.

A32 additions to tickets in the ld.-5d. range. and corresponding adjustments throughout the range of ticket denominations.

• In the East Midland Traffic Area, City of Oxford Motor Services, Ltd., has filed a new application for modifications of the rates now applicable on 70 routes. City workmen's fares, scholars' day returns, children's tickets and certain single and return ordinary tickets are affected. A rate of 0.85d.
