A SERIES OF road blockades by environmental campaigners are set to seriously disrupt freight traffic through Austria between 5 and 7 April.

The protests by Transitforum Austria are over increases in HGVs travelling through the Alps.

But the International Road Transport Union says that if the Austrian government allows the blockades to go ahead it will breach an obligation to allow the free movement of goods and people through the European Union.

A spokeswoman says: "We have asked the European Commission to take the necessary steps with the Austrian authorities to protect against these protests."

On Monday 5 April blockades are planned on the Al2 motorway between Kramsach and Wiesling from 3pm to 8pm, On Tuesday 6 April the LofererStrasse will be blocked from 11 am to 3pm and the Fernpasse-Strasse from I pm to 5pm.

On Wednesday 7 April the Al2 motorway will be blocked between Vomp and Volders between midday and midnight.

Few UK hauliers are likely to he affected following the general slump in their Continental work.

Ken Harvey of K& SJHarvey in Bolton, says: -We had been doing Austria since 1981 but stopped about 18 months ago because we just can't compete with the rates."
