phone numbers. To increase capacity on the phone network, numbers in six area codes will change in April 2000; there will also be changes to mobile and premium-rate numbers.

From June this year parallel running of old and new area telephone numbers will begin in London, Cardiff, Coventry, Southampton, Portsmouth and Northern Ireland. The full changeover will take effect on 22 April 2000.

The new prefixes will be: London, 020 7 and 020 8; Cardiff, 029 20; Coventry, 024 76; Southampton, 023 80; Portsmouth, 023 92; and Northern Ireland, 028 with new eight-digit local numbers.

Parallel running for new mobile phone numbers will begin this September; full changes to mobiles, pagers, local, national and premium-rate numbers will take place over the next two years.

Phone companies are urging business users to make their preparations now.
