Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The RAC is to provide a national breakdown and recovery service to the Ministry of Defence. Some 70,000 vehicles in the MoD fleet, excluding tracked vehicles, are covered by the twoyear contract.

Light vehicles and heavy-duty vehicles up to the Scorpion light tank are included. The RAC says Octagon, its HGV specialist, fought off competition from three other national breakdown-andrecovery companies to win the contract, the value of which has not been disclosed. While the MoD has used recovery contractors regionally for some work, this is the first time the ministry has awarded a national contract.

It is part of an MoD drive to control costs and improve fleet efficiency, says the RAC. "We believe it is the first time the MoD has looked outside to a breakdown organisation to help improve its internal fleet performance," says market development manager Chris Chatterton.

No MoD personnel will lose their jobs, according to a ministry spokesman.

The RAC will back up the inhouse recovery fleet and bill the MoD for the services supplied. The contract excludes Northern Ireland.

Royal Military Police will call a desk dedicated to the MoD at the RAC's Stockport fleet centre and arrange for recovery to the nearest MoD depot.

Normal RAC contractors will be used except for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes GVW, which will be handled by Octagon contractors.
