Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Daf is dropping its 6.2-litre engine currently used in the Daf 1900 and 60 Series (Freighter) and the latest 65 Series 17-tonner.

The restructured Dutch truck maker it will replace its NT/NS Series engine "in due course" with proprietary power units, probably from Cummins.

For the past two years the 11615'7kW (155-210hp) 62-litre Daf straight-six has been assembled at Leyland with Eindhoven supplied components for use in righthand-drive Daf 1900 and Leyland Daf 60 Series 17-tonners. The same 157IEW diesel is used in the 65 Series rigid launched at the Brussels Show in January.

Cummins has been supplying its six-litre B-Series for Leyland Daf's 45 Series (Roadrunner) and 50 Series (lightweight Freighter). It would be simple for Daf to take higher rated versions to replace its own diesel— not least as the B Series is available with Euro-1 emission ratings up to 172kW (230hp). If Daf does decide to extend its use of the B Series to the 65 Series operators stand to gain an extra 200kg in payload thanks to the B Series' lighter weight ERF, Foden and Seddon Atkinson all fit the B-Series in their 17-tonners, but Cummins is not taking the 62-litre Daf engine replacement business for granted. Daf has yet to disclose its plans for the 8.65 or 11.3-litre straight six engines.

CI Seddon Atkinson is considering a premium 17-tonne drawbar chassis with an 8.3-litre Cummins C-Series engine and Iveco ML EuroTech cab as part of its forthcoming 16 medium/heavy truck range (CM 25 Feb-3 March).

A C-Series-powered 16 rigid would mirror the Iveco EuroTech 180E Series drawbar chassis seen at Brussels and due to be sold in the UK. The 16's C-Series would be rated around the 198kW (265hp) mark.
