Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Reit Dougtao . .

I wish to thank Ron Douglas for his helpful and easy to understand series, "Driving for profit" and especially for the article -The day the diff went bang".

I drive a 16-ton 1969-registered BMC Mastiff with an Eaton two-speed axle. Soon after reading your article I noticed a clanking noise from the rear axle but was laughed at when I reported this; most of my attempts at defect reporting and diagnosis receive the same treatment from our fitters!

However, mindful of your article, I kept on nagging until, for the sake of peace and quietness, the appropriate tools were made and the diff removed; when both bearings were found to be damaged and the whole thing to be loose and rattling about in the casing, potentially a somewhat expensive situation.

So now instead of being ridiculed for 'always moaning about your vehicle" or even chided for neglect, I am getting congratulated on saving the cost of a new crown wheel or, worse still, the whole diff.

Thank you, Mr Douglas — keep up the good work!

MISS M. MURRAY, Shrewsbury, Salop.
