RAILWAYS are not about to be thrust into a straitjacket by the transport White Paper and their future is secure, British Rail chairman Peter Parker said on Friday.
Speaking at the annual dinner of the Chartered Institute of Transport he said: "We do not think that the Government has any intention of selling the railways down the river, on the contrary all the evidence indicates that the longer term future of the railways is secure.
"There is far more sympathy for the railways than some critics are prepared to acknowledge. I have not found any intention of prejudicing our potential as an industry playing an essential part in the new industrial strategy by adopting short-sighted policies which would condemn us to contraction and decay," said Mr Parker.
