Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THIS week's prizewinner is Mr. F. Newton, of Burgess Hill, Sussex. He says that on heavy lorries fitted with drop sides, the hinges of the sides are bolted to a side runner. which is also bolted to the main bearers—and these bolts have a tendency to work loose as the holes become elongated: this causes the sides to lean outwards in a dangerous manner.

Mr. Newton has overcome this difficulty by making up and inserting lin.-thick steel plates (as shown in diagram); the lip of these plates fits into a corresponding groove cut into the main bearer, it then being impossible for the bolts to lean outwards.

Comments Handyman: This is a problem of long standing with the all-wood body. The plate method would seem to offer a longer life. I am, however, concerned with similar trouble on the alloy-sided bodies. and would like to hear of a cure.
