BRIT A IN 'S latest roll-on/roll-off termina!, the third of nine planned by British Transport Docks Board, came into operation at Immingham last weekend with the first sailing of the 40 TIR-trailer-capacity "Tor Anglia" ferry to Sweden and Holland.

At the opening of the Elm. terminal, BTDB chairman Sir Arthur Kirby said the bulking of general cargo into the largest possible unit loads consistent with transport limitations would provide the greatest possible contribution to port efficiency. "The individual handling of multifarious small packages and consignments in and out of the ship and through the port will have to go", he said.

Two more roll-on/roll-off berths were planned for Southampton, and similar facilities would soon be available at Grimsby and King's Lynn, he added.

The Swedish Tor Line service starts fully on April 3. From that date the 7,500ton "Tor Anglia" starts a twice-weekly service to Gothenburg and a weekly service to Amsterdam. The 26-hour Immingham-Gothenburg service will leave Im mingham on Sundays at 11 a.m. and Tuesdays at 11.50 p.m.; the 13-hour service to Amsterdam will leave on Fridays at 10 p.m.

Until April 3 the ship will sail to Gothenburg (on March 23 and 27) at 4 p.m., with the first Immingham-Amsterdam service on March 31.

Closing time for freight traffic is two working hours before sailing.

Standard rates for full-width trailers (8 ft. 2+ in.) are 74s. 6d. per linear foot to Gothenburg and 40s. per foot to Amsterdam; there are variations for pre-booking and empty return traffic.

The terminal facilities include a 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse and a 7-acre guarded park. Mr. M. G. R. Stamford, freight manager for the line at Immingham, told COMMERCIAL MOTOR that demurrage would be charged for units not moved from the site soon after discharge.

Continental Ferry Trailers, McVeigh Transport, BRFS Roadferry, and the shipping and forwarding section of Thos. Cook and Son have offices on the site.
