OBJECTION "BORDERING ON ABSURDITY"

ANapplication by the Trent Motor Traction Co. to run a service from Derby to the new gun factory In Nottingham, was granted by the East Midland Traffic Commissioners in Nottingham, last week.

It was said that the buses would leave Derby at 6.50 a.m. and 6.50 p.m., in order to carry men engaged on the day and night shifts. The return buses would leave the factory for Derby when the shifts finished.

Evidence was called to prove that 27 men employed at the factory had signed a petition for a bus service, and that some of them had hinted at resigning their jobs if some more convenient method of getting to and from work were not provided.

For the opposition, Mr. H. Oldham Smith, Deputy Town Clerk of Derby, said Derby Corporation objected only to the proposed route and to the picking up of passengers on the outskirts of the town.

It was suggested that it was very unfair that the men should have to go into Derby to get on a bus, which would then bring them all the way back again on their way to Nottingham.

Mr. J. H. Stirk, chairman of the Commissioners, agreed, and described the corporation's contention as "a suggestion bordering on absurdity." Fre added that the Commissioners were much against inflicting any such hardship and inconvenience on workmen at 7 a.m. on cold winter mornings.

The application was granted.
