Scam goes it alone

SCANIA will never be a major customer for "off-the-shelf drive train components" according to the company's supply director Carl Skygge.

Speaking at a conference on "The world truck" organised by the Institute of Purchasing and Supply, Mr Skygge said that the current policy will continue where Scania exercises full control over the design, development and production of engines, gear boxes and axles.

The same philosophy is also extended to frames, cabs and "other strategic components," he said.

This did not mean, however, that Scania would not cooperate with other manufacturers in joint development work although Mr Skygge did suggest that this would be limited to relatively minor components.

"We are prepared to play an active part in sharing the costs of joint development work, we bear the costs of tools used by our suppliers to manufacture components on our own account and we engage the resources of our design department and laboratories to test and develop new features, materials and production methods," he said.

An interesting statistic quoted by Mr Skygge was that the UK is in second place in the list of component and raw material suppliers to Scania with a value of Skr 387m — £33m.

(West Germany is the major supplier to a value of 650m Skr.)
