• Environmental restrictions on the use of the Waverton, Wigton depot of Cumbrian haulier David Harrison have been removed "with some trepidation" by North Western LA Martin Albu.
Harrison's licence had been for 38 vehicles and 20 trailers, with 10 vehicles and 10 trailers based at Waverton. He applied for two more vehicles and trailers and the removal of conditions. These had limited the number of vehicles and trailers based at Waverton; banned maintenance at the site; and restricted the hours between which vehicles could enter and leave.
Roger Hird, for Harrison, said that when the LA imposed the conditions in January 1990, he had indicated that they would be reviewed after a test period. There was a growing pressure on the haulage industry to make timed deliveries; since 19 March 1990, it had been necessary for vehicles to leave outside the laiddown times on 191 occasions, The depot was alongside the A596 and planning permission had been granted for additional warehousing and workshop.
Opposing the relaxation of conditions George Girvan, who lived opposite the site entrance, said the restrictions had resulted in a considerable reduction in the number of vehicles leaving early on Sundays and bank holidays. The new workshop would increase the number of vehicles, using the site, he claimed, but agreed that the whole fleet aJready came to Waverton for fuel.
Harrison said that stocking and movement of coal, which had caused a lot of the problems for residents, had been moved elsewhere.
