• Redfern Coaches (Mansfield)'s licence has only been renewed for a twoyear probationary period.
In May its licence authorisation was cut from 19 to 13 vehicles because of maintenance problems. Redfern had sought renewal for 14 vehicles.
Eastern Traffic Commissioner Brigadier Compton Boyd and DTp financial assessor Guy McGregor considered financial evidence in private at the company's request and the Commissioner said he was satisfied about its financial standing.
Vehicle examiner Gerald Richardson said that when he visited the company, one vehicle he had asked to see had gone out on a school contract before his arrival and had returned with an immediate prohibition notice for two defects, He examined six other vehicles, issuing one defect notice.
Managing director Alfred Chambers said that his son Christopher had been in charge
of the workshops until the last public inquiry. Despite attending a Dip Vehicle Inspectorate course, his son's attitude had not improved. As a result he would not be returning as workshop manager. Boyd said the immediate prohibition less than two months after the last public inquiry showed there were still chinks in its armour.
