Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AS PART of itS bid to encourage heavy goods vehicles to keep to major roads, Hertfordshire County Council has carried out a survey into facilities for drivers in the county.

One of the major factors examined is adequate parking facilities for lorries, and lorries left overnight in residential areas. There is only one municipal lorry park in the county, at Stevenage.

There are only two public toilets on major roads in the county, which have parking for hgv nearby, and on Hertfordshire's motorways there is no provision at all.

The survey raises the question of how new facilities could be financed, and asks whether mobile canteens should be licensed and provided on designated sites.

It also questions if there is sufficient signposti ng of main routes, whether there are enough lay-bys on major roads, and if the level of special provision for hgv drivers should be improved generally.

A consulation document has just been published by the Council and its highways department is asking other local authorities and interested parties — including the Road Haulage Association and Freight Transport Association for their views. The RHA has circulated a copy to some of its members and hopes to report to the Council within the next few weeks.

The FTA is currently collating replies and hopes to give its reaction next month.

Copies of the study are available from the County Highways Department, Goldings, North Road, Hertford.
