Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

OLDHAM Batteries claim to be the first British manufacturer to enter the commercial vehicle maintenance-free battery market.

The new battery range covers 17 vehicle marques, and will fit most commercial vehicles. Maintenance-free batteries are interchangeable with conventional ones, have standard SMMT posts preventing the need for special terminals or fittings, and are also available with screw thread variants.

In order to maintain their charge and eliminate the need For topping up, the batteries are manufactured completely sealed. Their outer containers are made from polypropylene, with heat-sealed lids.

Inside, fine grain lead-calcium grids in envelope separators -esist the danger of Pvercharging, which in turns prevents the internal shorting Pften caused by excessive Abration.

"Gassing, corrosion and acid spillage are no longer a problem," claims Oldham. The company claims the new -naintenance-free range ncreases cold-start Performance, gives a better service life and much reduces self-discharge characteristics. Dldham says the batteries have ample reserves of power, and, if properly stored, can be relied on

to start an engine even after a 15-month laid-up period.

All the batteries carry a twoyear guarantee.

Another new addition to the Oldham range is the Easy Care battery which needs less maintenance and offers more power for no increase in price. These improvements have been achieved by introducing new grid manufacturing techniques which reduce the antimony content considerably, with resultant increases in cold-start reserve power.

According to Oldham, the major benefit of these modifications is a reduction in the amount of servicing needed. "The batteries should last three times longer than conventional ones before requiring topping up," it says.

Provided the regulator is not set to exceed 14.4 volts, this means 45,000 miles — approximately three years' constant service.

The Easy Care 45 battery is not completely sealed, it incorporates a topping up facility for use under extreme conditions.
