Small British haulier wins £6m contract

EIS WEEK Hudson Interational Transport, which oprates a five-vehicle fleet from lfracornbe, Devon, was cornleting a contract which will e worth £1.9m a year for the ext three years. It has c.onracted to carry 1,000 tons of teel a day from a steel Mill at ssahim in Iran to a production lant in Tehran; a round trip f 250 miles.

The company started negotitions with the Iranians in anuary and has been involved ▪ the details of the contract ince April. It will be operating partnership with an Iranian ompany with depots in Tehan and London. The company fill trade as Hudsons Iran.

The contract will require 80 -iaximum capacity vehicles nd Mr Richard Hudson, manging director of the company, old CM this week that the atention was to purchase DAF 800s. He had been already romised traffic from Holland o Tehran for all of the ebicles at around £4,000 a Dad. Said Mr Hudson: "This ilI take care of the expense f getting vehicles out to the /fiddle East." The company has not yet decided if it will purchase all 80 vehicles or whether it will sub-contract. This depends largely on the outcome of the negotiations with an Iranian bank which is putting up funds for the canital equipment.

Mr Hudson said he was prepared to consider sub-contracting up to 50 per cent of the work. According to Mr Hudson, the special contract commission would require to be more than the recognised 10 per cent since Hudsons will be taxed at the rate of 5 per cent on the gross takings.

Already 40 hgv 1 drivers in Devonshire have applied to Hudsons for jobs in Iran.

The company will be operating a vehicle workshop in Tehran and already there are two of its own drivers in the Middle East preparing for the contract starting in September. They are considering making applications to the Road Transport Industry Training Beard for a special course for their driving and workshop staff.

Hudson has been in haulage for four years, but has only held an operator's licence for the last two and a half years.
