MR. N. RAMAMURTHL materials controller of Ashok Leyland, Ltd., Madras, left for India, on Tuesday, after a threemonths' stay in Britain co-ordinating material supplied for the manufacture of Leyland Titan double-deck and Tiger Single-deck bus chassis in India.

MR. F. K. POINTON, general manager of Hebbie Motor Services, Ltd., has been appointed teneral manager of East Midland Motor Services, Ltd. He will replace MR. S. J. B. SYRME, who has moved to the Potteries Motor Traction Co., Ltd., to succeed MR. C. W. WROTH as general manager.

c2 MR. E. JACKSON has been appointed transport, manager of Ansells Brewery, Ltd., Birmingham, following the death of MR. S. T. T. GEARY.

MR, BRIAN SKELTON has been appointed manager of the Cambridge depot of Kerry's (Great Britain), Ltd. He has previously served at three other depots.

MR. N. A. SCURRAH is IO retire in September after 20 years as rolling stock engineer with Bradford Transport Department. He has been with the department for 42 years, and his assistant, MR. K. E. GRIFFITHS, has been recommended as his successor.

MR. E. W. ARKLE, director of traffic services, London Midland Region, British Railways, and MR. A. W. TArr, assistant general manager, Eastern Region, have been appointed to the board of the Atlantic Steam Navigation Co., Ltd., operators of the Transport Ferry Service.

PRESTON FARES UP?

A N increase of Id. on the present tA minimum fare of l+d. is to be sought by Preston Corporation, and the question of raising charges for school buses is to be considered. These decisions were taken last week despite a plea by Cllr. C. Iddon that if some economies were applied the undertaking would save £21,000 a year.

OBITUARY

WE regret to announce the deaths of MR. WILFRED ATKINSON and MR. W. H. GILES.

Mr. Atkinson had been for 30 years an area sales manager for the John Bull Rubber Co., Ltd: • For 27 years he had been in the Bedford district. He was 64.

Mr. Giles, who was 60, was formerly head of a coachbuilding business in the West Country. He -joined Bonallack and Sons, Ltd., as field engineer in 1953.

Minister Determined on Outsize Loads

'THE Minister of Transport is adamant 1 in his decision to prohibit abnormal indivisible loads from motorways (see

page 837) A deputation from the National Road Transport Federation met him last week in an unsuccessful effort to change his mind. It comprised Mr. S. C. Bond (president, Traders Road Transport Association); Mr. T. Venn (chairman, Road Haulage Association's heavy haulage group); Mr. R. Morton Mitchell and Mr. George Mitchell (N.R.T.F.).

The deputation pointed out that motorways were understood to he primarily for use by commercial vehicles to help trade and industry, and that the Minister's proposal would bar an important section. As Service vehicles with outsize loads were to he permitted, commercial abnormal loads should also be allowed.

The proposal applies particularly to the Preston by-pass, which has only two-lane carriageways, and it does not necessarily follow that the prohibition will be applied to other motorways with three lanes. On the other hand, the new motorways are to have a maximum headroom of 16 ft. 6 in., which would automatically debar many abnormal loads.

Regulations containing the Minister's proposals (see page 837) will continue in force until August 1, 1959.

NO RELAXATION FOR TROLLEYBUSES

A NSWERING a question by Lord

Merrivale in the House of Lords on Monday, Lord Mancroft said the Government could not consider bringing the provisions governing trolleybuses into . line with those concerning motorbuses. They thought that Parliamentary approval should still be required for new trolleybus routes, because the installation of equipment in the streets affected the ordinary citizen. and public bodies to a much greater extent than motorbus services.

Lord Merrivale believed that in the national interest trolleybuses should be encouraged, Of 30 undertakings operating them, nine were either to reduce their serviceNr withdraw trolleybuses.

Lord Mancroft replied that generally operators thought the disadvantages outweighed the advantages of trolleybuses, but for different reasons from those given by Lord Merrivale.

E145,000 BRIDGE PLAN

lappLANS for a £145,000 bridge to replace I the narrow, hump-backed Methley Bridge over the River Calder, have been submitted for approval to West Riding County Council. The proposed bridge would speed traffic on the important commercial route between the Leeds area and the Great North Road at Barnsdale. It would be 42 ft. wide, and designed to provide for future widening.

. The Ministry of Transport have already indicated that favourable consideration would be given to a request for a grant towards the cost.
