made in the negotiations by the London Meat Carriers' Joint Industrial Council on the demand of the unions for a 15-per-cent. increase in pay for meat-vehicle drivers. At a meeting of the council last week, attended by Mr. E. W. Bolton, London regional conciliation officer of the Ministry of Labour, the employers repeated their offer to submit the question to arbitration. This was not taken up by the union representatives, who are now considering the matter further.

One of the difficulties is that, although the wage claim is based on the increase in the speed limit of heavy goods vehicles from 20 m.p.h. to 30m.p.h., the unions have demanded that the concession should be granted to all drivers, whether their vehicles are under or over 3 tons unladen, or are engaged on longor short-distance work, The claim also covers drivers of outfits hauling drawbar trailers, which arc still restricted to 20 m.p.h.

The failure of the 'unions to accept the employers' offer suggests a reluctance to submit the question to independent arbitration. Meanwhile, meat hauliers who wish to change their heavy .lorryand-trailer outfits to the more mobile 7-tonners weighing under 3 tons unladen, are being frustrated in their efforts.
