Amongst the inquiries recently received at the office of the High Commissioner for Canada, we are informed that a financial house in Nova Scotia offers to provide, for a " United Kingdom manufacturer of automobiles," half the capital necessary to establish a Canadian branch factory.

Mr. Burford's New Business.

Elsewhere on this page, amongst the list of recent registrations, we refer to the launching of a new concern under the title of British Business Motors, Ltd. Mr. H. G. Burford is to be managing director, and Mr. S. F. Edge is one of the directors. This is the company which will now acquire the business previously carried on under the title of Sturmey Motors, Ltd., and which will take over the whole of the plant, machinery and premises of that company. It will also take over the Lotis factory and Hewer's car body works.

A Watering-places" Prize

Scheme.

In view of the large number of communications which were received as a result of the recent competition which was held, in connection with our regular " Drivers and Mechanics " pages, for the best lists of running costs over a given period, we have now decided to make a preliminary announcement of a further competition which will afford interesting occupation to those of our readers who are steamwagon drivers, as well as valuable information to steam-wagon owners all over the country. We shall, on the completion of this competition, announce one which will be exclusively open to those who are responsible for petrol-driven machines.

We offer a first prize of one guinea, and a second prize of half a guinea to the contributor who sends in the best list of recognized and authorized watering-places which may be used for a steam wagon along any well-known highway in this country over a distance of not less than 35 miles. Those competitors will stand the best chance who give careful descriptions of the locality of the watering-places and how they may be recognized, together with their distances from some well-known points, as well as information as to the regular nature of and the quantity of the supply of water and its ease of approach In order to allow sufficient time for the collec tion of the necessary information, we are prepared to receive lists up to the last day of September.

C.M.U.A. Business.

At the last monthly meeting of the C.M.U.A., amongst the matters which were dealt with were : the conference on road material, which took place on 21st .June; the R.I.A.'s opposition to the L.C.C. trailer tramcar Bill before the House of Lords ; the report of the Parade Committee ; the terms of the affiliation of the North and East Lancashire C.M.U.A., and the result of Mr. Shrapnell Smith's visit to the Local Government Board with regard to steam-wagon brakes.

Belhaven' Ltd., with an authorized capital of 235,000 in 21 shares, and with its office at Belhaven Works, Wishaw, to purchase the business of the Belhaven Engineering and Motor Works, Wishaw. First directors : It. R. Mellor and T. G. Morton.

British Business Motors, Ltd., with an authorized capital of 250,000, to acquire the business of motorcar manufacturers lately carried on by Sturmey Motors, Ltd., at Coventry. First directors S. F. Edge (chairman), H. G. Burford (managing director) and H. T. Vane.

Craighill and Carter, Ltd., with an authorized capital of £2000 in 21 shares' by Waterlow Brothers and Layton, Ltd., Birchin Lane, E.C., to carry on the business of manufacturers of traction engines, mechanical and other lorries, etc. First directors : W. R. Craighill, W. B. Carter and T. C. Bateman.

Metropolitan Fare Register Co., Ltd., with an authorized capital of 212,500 in 10s. shares, and with its office at 80, Belvedere Road, Lambeth, S.E., to carry on the business of manufacturers of and dealers in taximeters and to acquire the business carried on by the Metropolitan Fare Register Co., Ltd. (incorporated in 1905) and to enter into an. agreement with same and W. J. Critchett, the liquidator. First directors : W. L. Matthews, A. j. Lippens and W. J. Critchett.

The Daimler Co., Ltd.. notifies us that its works and offices will be closed for the annual summer holiday from Friday, the 2nd August, until Monday the 12th idem.

Fischer's Ball and Bearing Co. notify us that, in consequence of the continued increase of their business, they have found it necessars. to remove to more com.modious premises. The new address is Carlton House, 28, Ridi Street, Birmingham.

For Makers of Chassis.

A firm of manufacturers of light steam cars would be glad to hear from any makers who are willing to quote for chassis consisting of pressed-steel frame, cardan and front axles, steering gear, side levers, etc., suitable for the transmission of 20 h.p. and built to blue prints and instructions. Any communication should, in the first place, be forwarded to " Steam Chassis," c/o the Editor of this journal.

Tire Guarantees.

The Peter Union Tyre Co., Lt-d., writes to us with reference to the 15,000-mile tire guarantee which it recently gave in connection with a tender to the Westminster City Council, as recorded by us on page 431 of our last issue. The company points out that this guarantee is insisted upon by the Council, and is given by all the tire manufacturers who supply solid-rubber tires for the Council's vehicles. The letter proceeds : It is, of course, quite an exceptional guarantee, and only given in respect of tires supplied to the Westminster City Council, but we are able to give. the guarantee owing to the conditions under which the tires are used. From your report it would appear that it was quite a new feature, and was a guarantee only given by the Peter Union Tyre Co., Ltd." We gladly publish this amplification.

The annual outing of the staff of the head office and London branch of the British Petroleum Co., Ltd., was held on Saturday last. The party numbered 125, and included Mr. R. Airey, General Manager, Mr. C. Bourke, Secretary, Mr. A. Grey. Manager of the London branch (town trade), and Mr. A. Neva Manager of the City department of the London branch. The trip was to Windsor by launch via Reading.

Ivel Price Alteration.

The Ivel Agricultural Motors, Ltd., advises us that, owing to increased cost of material and labour, and the embodiment of many improvements, it has found it necessary to raise the price of the new Ivel 24 h.p. tractor with magneto ignition to £355. A paraffin vaporizer costs £12 10s. extra. In the course of our report of the recent Doncaster Show, we drew attention to the various hnprovements which have been effected to this interesting little agrimotor. Thornycroft's Order Book.

John I. Thornyeroft and Co., Ltd., writes that it is particularly gratified with the state of its order book. During the last few months it has received an exceptional number of repeat orders, and amongst these may be mentioned several new 30 h.p. War Office subsidy lorries, three additional 30 h.p. lorries for Southern Nigeria, and two 30 h.p watering wagons for the Straits Settlements.

Froy and Sons, Ltd., Jennens, Welsh and Co., Ltd., the Leeds Industrial Co-operative Society, Ltd., the Brentford Gas Co., Farnham United Breweries, Ltd., Winchester Brewery Co., Ltd.,

ford Brewery, Malvern Hygienic Laundry Co., Ltd., Airds Ltd., Guest, . Keen and Nettlefolds, Ltd., Messrs. S. Jenkins and Co., Coventry Perseverance Co-operative Society, Ltd., Hawthorn, Leslie and Co., Ltd., Samuel Smith (Sheffield), Ltd., and the Gateshead Board of Guardians have placed additional orders recently for Thornyeroft vans and lorries. Additional chars-a-bancs chassis have been delivered to the Lake District Road Traffic Co., the Llandudno Coaching and Carriage Co., Ltd. and the Harrogate Carriage Co., Ltd. In London, recent orders are from the Aerated Candy Co., Ltd., Mellin's Food, Ltd., and Mr. J. H. Stone, florist.

Thornyeroft's also advise us that they are shipping quite a large number of vehicles to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and abroad generally. This company has recently opened a Scottish motorvehicle department at 53, Bothwell Street, Glasgow.
