the chance of a sneak 'preview' to take a look at Iveco's New Stralis.

IVECO HAS BROKEN with tradition by revealing the New Stralis tractor to the press ahead of next month's official launch and the UK debut at the Birmingham Motor Show on April 24-26.

Despite the low-key roll-out in Monte Carlo last week, which coincided with the Italian truckmaker's announcement that it is sponsoring New Zealand's All Blacks rugby team, it's clear the New Stralis cab has been seriously tweaked inside and out.

On the outside everything below the windscreen is different, including the adoption of a new grille with a panel which has more room for signwriting,as well as a revised front bumper and headlight cluster. Above the screen there's a sleeker, more aerodynamic roof moulding with two new roof-height options known as 'Cube' and'Super Cube' providing up to 115mm extra headroom inside and additional storage space, although the cab floor remains unchanged.

Other exterior changes include new mirror clusters (in line with latest EU regs) and a sunvisor integrated into the more distinctly curving cab profile. The New Stralis also gains big exterior lockers on both sides of the cab, complete with larger apertures.

While Iveco's minders at Monte Carlo were adamant that the doors on the sole 500hp display model were staying firmly shut ahead of next month's official unveiling, CM was still able touncoverplenty of secrets about the interior changes to the Stralis cab.

Extending the cab's rear wall by 100mm with a noticeable bulge(liketheActros) has made room for wider bunks. There's also some more rearward adjustment on the seats.

The previous floormounted, swivelling EuroTronic gear selector console has been replaced— Iveco has followed the lead of Daf and created a mode selector switch in the dash, while manual changes can now be made by a columnmounted lever.

We also spotted improved carpet trim and seating materials, with revised lockers over the windscreen.The latest Kew tractor has clearly been treated to a serious interior makeover.

Beneath the hood the Nee° Euro-4 and 5 driveline, based around the 10 and 13-litre Cursor engines, will remain unchanged for the time being, although for Euro-6 lveco is promising to bring out a 600hpplus 'big-banger' engine with a larger-displacement than the current top-of-the range Cursor 13 with its maximum rating of 560hp. Iveco boss Paolo Monferino confirmed that Iveco was capable of matching the kind of engine power and torque offerings extracted by Volvo and Scania from their 16-litre engines, but he insisted that the demand for that kind of power was limited.

However, he agreed demand could be accelerated if there is more common usage of longer, heavier (60-tonne/25.25m) vehicles within the EU.

• As part of the UK launch for the New Stralis, and in recognition of its sponsorship deal with New Zealand's All Blacks Rugby team, Iveco UK will be displaying specially liveried `All-Black' demonstration tractors at a series of various launch events.

These right-handdrive versions of the New Stralis may be sold as a special limited edition.
