Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Powershift reports that there are now 35,000 clean-fuel vehicles on Britain's roads, excluding milk floats. Of these, the vast majority are LPG with about 1,000 running on natural gas and a few hundred relying on batteries.

Wallis admits this is a very small percentage of the UK vehicle parc but says: "Over the next year we are expecting another big increase in grant applications and many of the vehicles concerned are used in urban areas, where it will make the most difference. Overall, we expect more than a doubling of this number in 2001."

The CV sector is a key part of this process, especially lighter CVs. "They are all vehicles that deliver in urban areas, and that makes them very important for us," says Wallis.
