IN WHAT is likely to be one of the last road service licensing appeals to be considered by Transport Secretary Nicholas Ridley, he has rejected appeals by Strathclyde PIE and Central Scottish Omnibuses against a decision last summer to carve up new services between the two operators.
He has endorsed his inspector. Mr D. Awdas's opinion that the two operators arguments were inadequately substantiated.
The Commissioners granted Strathclyde authority to extend Glasgow city services into List Kilbride new town and gave Central authority to introduce a new service linking Glasgow suburbs, but the operators wanted each others' licences to be revoked on appeal.
Awdas, in upholding the original judgment, has criticised both operators.
"I find the sequence of events in this case disturbing, and hardly in the public interest.
"Like the Traffic Commissioners, I regret that sensible and meaningful consultation
has not produced a package acceptable to both sides, but I
cannot apportion blame, since both sides appear to be at fault, and the proper co-ordination of services has been igilored.''
