Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE NATIONAL this Company is expected to announce next week whether its Ribble. Crosville and London Country subsidiaries arc to be split into smaller operating units. Transport Secretary Nicholas Ridley wants them brought down in size to ensure fairer competition with small operators in the 1113rket.

But NBC management at both headquarters and company level is campaigning to keep them large as it feels that they need their strength to compete with P1 l bus operators and, in the case of London Country, London Buses.

London Country managenient is lobbying hard to keep the company intact.

NBC engineering subsidiary Carlyle Works has reorganised itself into three divisions with specific areas of responsibility.

They are: Carlyle Vehicles, which will be responsible for making minibuses.

Carlyle has built over 300 minibuses based on the Eord Transit parcel van and has also completed 16 and 20-seat prototypes based on the Freight Rover Sherpa, and hopes soon to build 16 and 20 seaters on the new Transit.

Most Carlyle minibuses have been supplied to NBC: operators, although a few have gone to council operators and Carlyle also reports increasing interest from the private sector for its vehicles.

Carlyle Service will overhaul, refurbish, repair and maintain buses and coaches already in service.

Carlyle Works is already maintaining buses and coaches tbr both private and public sector operators. Among its present contracts is one for overhauling London Buses' Leyland Nationals.

Finally Carlyle Parts will deal in factored and re-manufactured parts including major units. Both C:arlyle Parts and Service will be involved in the Carlyle Van I I001 agency.
