A N IMPROVEMENT in disc brakes is 1-1 shown in patent No. 902,531. The scheme is intended principally, but not exclusively, for heavily loaded wheels. (Cranes (Dereham) Ltd., South Green Works, Dereham, Norfolk.) The drawing shows a twin-wheel assembly according to the invention. The disc (1) is carried by a spider (2) attached to the hub. A feature of the layout is that the disc would prevent the hub corning off in the event of complete bearing failure.
The brake carrier (3) is rigidly fixed to the axle by a flange and bolts. The two alves of the brake mechanism are held :ogether by a pair of high-tensile bolts '4). These not only unite the parts but dso form guides for the pressure-plates :o slide upon. Hardened sleeves are proTided for this purpose.
The pressure pads are brought to bear ly tightening a coarse-threaded bolt (5) )y any convenient means. The two-start hread is fast enough to enable a spring o be used for the return stroke.

Compact Low-level Engine
A NOVEL LAYOUT for a fourI—I cylinder engine forms the subject of patent No. 897,648. The chief aim is to provide in a small compass a low-level engine of X-form, preferably air cooled, although water cooling is also covered. (W. Salzmann, II 1 Bielstrasse, Solothurn, Switzerland.)
Improved Master Cylinder
PATENT No. 902,391 refers to brakes in which a primary shoe, when moved, loads a master hydraulic cylinder that powers the main brake. The subject of the patent is an improved form of master cylinder. (Dunlop Rubber Co. Ltd., 1 Albany Street, London, N.W.1.)
Comprehensive Container System
AN articulated vehicle in which the semi-trailer is an exchangeable unit is described in patent No. 901,241. The trailer is a wheeled container and can be transported by rail, sea or air to complete its journey by road. (Troroc Ltd., 44 Brazennose Street, Manchester 2.)
