AF [ER the British Transport Commission had withdrawn their objection, the North Western Deputy Licensing Authority granted a new A licence for a vehicle of 4-) tons unladen to N. Watson And Co., Wardle, near Rochdale, at Manchester last week.

Mr. J. A. Dunkerley, for the applicants, said that before nationalization they ran A-licence vehicles. In 1950 they operated a vehicle under C-hiring margin, and recently two special Alicence vehicles had been purchased, also an ordinary-A-licence lorry by means of a take-over in November, 1955.

Reynolds and Son, Ltd., fruit and potato merchants and customers of the applicants under C-hiring arrangements. had asked them to obtain a licence which would enable empty running to he eliminated.

Mr. S. Brown, managing director of Reynolds, said that the C-hiring arrangement was regarded as untidy and uneconomic. The vehicle was it present running to the Eastern Counties empty to bring back fruit and vegetables. If the application were granted, Reynolds would still use the ,vehicle but Watson would be able to carry outward loads and offer a better rate.

The Vehicle had a special device for lifting sacks of potatoes, and was particularly suitable for Reynolds' work.
