AVCIS has issued some advice to help operators lessen the risk that their vehicles and goods are stolen:

OPERATORS
• Ensure staff wear identification and challenge people they don't know.
• Remind staff to adopt a 'need-to-know' attitide when discussing routes/consignments with drivers and consignees. Don't discuss this in public places.
• Do include security responsibilities in drivers' contract of employment.
• Ensure drivers protect their identity, including documents and company-issued clothing. (Thieves use shipping orders, consignment notes and company paperwork along with high-visibility clothing to impersonate employees and collect loads.)
• Never disclose information to telephone callers without verifying who they are.
DRIVERS
• Never leave keys in the ignition when away from the vehicle.
• Secure vehicles when making deliveries.
• If approached prior to entering a delivery destination, check the identity of the individuals. Call the dispatch office to confirm any redirection of the delivery.
• Watch out for incorrect or short loading by careless or dishonest warehouse staff, even those not directly involved with the loading process.
