joannalmrk efarbi.co.uk UNITED PALLET NETWORK (ITN) says its sales and marketing drive is paying off, with members winning contracts and Northern Irish business Liam Connolly (Roadfreight) joining the network.

The Melton Mowbray-based pallet network has just appointed Andrew Simpson as regional sales manager for the South.

He is joining Glenn Westwood, who has been covering a similar role for the north since April 2009.

UPN director Dave Brown (pictured right) tells CM: "The regional sales managers go out and visit UPN members' depots, get a feel for their businesses, then set up meetings with potential clients [in order] to sell our brand.

"Glenn's work showed us how active marketing on behalf of members can really pay dividends." As a direct consequence of the marketing drive, Fauld. Staffordshire-based Smallwoods has secured a contract to deliver building materials to a pair of Tarmac sites.

Smallwoods managing director Simon Smallwood says: "Tarmac was impressed with the technology that underpins UPN, and the online booking facility was a very important factor in its decision."

Gateshead, Tyne & Wear-based Lescost Transport attributes its contract renewals with moulding manufacturer Thermo Dynamics and automotive component firm Labone Castleside to the efforts of the sales managers.

A Lescost spokeswoman adds: "UPN has really worked hard on our behalf, and is helping to drive the business forward."

Also, County Fermanagh-based Liam Connolly ( Roadfreight) joined the network on 1 February. The firm operates with another 23 sub-depots to provide a 48-hour service across Northern and the Republic of Ireland.

To cope with an anticipated increase in volumes this year, the pallet network will increase its hub by 20,0001t2 to 185,000ff.

The expansion is expected to be completed by Easter in order to cope with what is traditionally its busiest time of year.
