Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• In the past the industry relied on CFC-based refrigerants, with R12, R22 and 11502 being the favoured choices for a complete range of temperature applications from deep-frozen to chilled.

Now, as a result of the Montreal Protocol, no refrigerants which deplete the ozone layer can be used. The industry has switched to the greener CFC-free options of RAMA, which is a high-pressure, lowtemperature refrigerant able to run down to -25-C, and R413A or R134A For chilling applications.

Older refrigerant products are now outlawed for use on new installations. The trade-off with the newer products is that they have to be used at higher pressures for the same degree of effectiveness, which has meant modifications to compressors and piping systems.
