• Would-be HGV drivers in the West Midlands who cannot afford training could realise their goal now that a Dudleybased training school has secured a grant from the European Social Fund.
The cash means that 60 trainee places for Class 1 and Class 2 licences will be available at Kingswinford Industrial Training Services (KITS) this year, at no cost to applicants in receipt of state benefits.
Keith Beddard, curriculum co-ordinator at KITS, says: "We have training courses starting on 8 March, and they are free— there are no catches."
To qualify for the courses applicants must be over 21 with a car driving licence and in receipt of a state benefit such
as Jobseekers' Allowance or Income Support. They must also live in and around Dudley and Sandwell, including the DY and 862,B70 postcode areas. Courses are due to run in March, May and July or August.
The training will include load security and the tachograph regulations. Beddard believes the haulage industry often gets a bad name because of "half-trained drivers"; KITS seeks to "create professionals", he adds.
