Two vehicles were issued with immediate prohibition notices: one had defective brakes and has been referred to the Crown Prosecution Services for recommended action. The other was using loaded skips in an unsatisfactory condition.

The driver of a third vehicle, which was carrying butane cannisters, appeared to be unaware of the relevant packaged goods regulations. This incident has been reported to the Health and Safety Executive says Sergeant Andy Kinniburgh of Merseyside Traffic Police, who co-ordinated the operation.

The hour-long check was held off the A580 East Lancashire Road to prevent warnings being passed via CB radio. Agencies involved included Trading Standards officers from Knowsley Borough Council, which has suffered fly tipping problems on its Knowsley North Industrial Estate, and the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority Eleven vehicles were stopped: alleged offences included a variety of tachograph infringements. One vehicle failed to display an 0licence and several drivers have been ordered to provide proof of registration as waste carriers.

MWDA says waste carriers can reduce inconvenience to themselves by applying for a credit card-sized version of their certificates which can be carried in the cab. Photocopies are not acceptable and without these cards operators must produce the actual certificate within seven days.
