Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The publication of the International Journal of Physical Distribution is welcome news because this rapidly developing science—or art—deserves a specialist journal to act as a focus of opinion and a spur to action. Prof Gordon Wills, of The Management Centre, University of Bradford, is editor-in-chief, assisted by an American and European editor and a distinguished international editorial advisory panel.

Transport is only one, and not perhaps the most important, aspect of physical distribution management (PDM), but no serious student or ambitious transport manager can afford to neglect wider perspectiveS. The new publication deserves also to be read by senior managers responsible for distribution or marketing.

The first issue of the Journal covers a wide range of subjects such as depot location; changes in distribution methods caused by marketing strategies; the future of containerization; the strategic planning of physical distribution systems; the planning of overhauls and repairs in air transport; inventory control; systems planning in physical distribution; selling PDM to top management; distribution channel selection procedures.

Although the bulk of the text is in English, multi-lingual synopses of the main articles are included. There is a page of book reviews and a valuable three-page section devoted to a World Register of Current Research; with so much going on quite narrow specializations within the PDM field may develop and the journal should prove invaluable as a reference source.

The International Journal of Physical Distribution is published three times a year by 1PC Transport Press Ltd, Dorset House, Stamford Street, London SEI. The annual Subscription costs £5 5s (£5.25) including postage and packing. Applications to: Subscription Department, IPC Business Press (S and D) Ltd, 40 Bowling Green Lane, London EC!. J.D.
