Gent, Mr. Williams was born at Merthyr Tydfil in 1898 and was educated at Eastbourne College and London University, where he graduated with honours. He became a solicitor with honours in 1921 and practised as a company lawyer in the City of London for 22 years. He joined the S.M.M.T. at the end of 1943 and formed its legal department, which he ran until being appointed secretary at the beginning of 1955. In 1964 he was awarded the O.B.E. for his services to the motor industry. Although Mr. Williams is retiring, his advice and experience will still be available to the Society when required. Mr. Gent is aged 29 and was admitted a solicitor in 1959. He joined S.M.M.T. in October, 1961, to take charge of the legal department and became assistant secretary on January I, 1964.

At Nottingham University last week Mr. Peter Newcomb w a s granted a Doctorate of Science (D.Sc.) in recognition of his work over the past 10 years at the Ferodo Research Laboratories, Where he

has been investigatMr. Newcomb. ing the thermal problems of braking. Dr. Newcomb secured a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics at Nottingham in 1951 and also that year gained a B.Sc. external degree at London. Two years later he was awarded an M.Sc. (Aerodynamics) at Nottingham. Since joining Ferodo Ltd. in 1954, he has published more than 30 papers, the majority on problems related to heat dissipation, and has addressed learned societies abroad.

Mr. Edward S. Chapman has been appointed general manager of Electric Power Storage Ltd., Which, will become a. trading company on January 1 with headquarters at Clifton Junction, near Manchester. Mr. Chapman is an executive director of the company, which was formed last year by the Chloride Group to co-ordinate the activities of its three U.K. companies manufacturing lead acid batteries. Under Mr. M. A. GriffithJones, sales and marketing director, Electric Tower Storage will have six selling divisions.

'Mr. J. K. Lovelace has been appointed general manager of Cummins Engine Company's new Qin). diesel engine components plant in Darlington. He succeeds Mr. W. L. Black. A 29-year-old American, Mr. Lovelace served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy. Five years ago he joined Cummins as a sales engineer, later becoming supervisor of all international sales. Subsequently he went to Germany to assist in the Cummins sales office in Essen, and then came to London as manager of project implementation. The Cummins plant in Darlington is next to the new I:51m. Chrysler-Cummins unit soon to start production of Cummins V6-Val and V8-Vale diesel engines.

Mr. W. W. Williams, at present assistant traffic manager of Bristol Omnibus Co. Ltd., has been appointed traffic manager of Brighton. Hove and District Omnibus Co. Ltd.. with effect from February 1, 1965.

Mr. J. C. Kidby has been appointed technical manager of Silentbloc Ltd., of Crawley, Sussex.

Mr. Russell Barker has been appointed northern regional sales manager for Wingard Ltd. accessory sales. He has been with the Winfard sales force for just over two years and was previously with Brown Brothers Ltd, Mr. R. Toop has been appointed representative for Anglesey, Caerns. Cheshire, Lancashire, Denbighs, Flints and Westmorland. He joins Wingard from Brown Brothers Ltd.

India Tyres Ltd. have appointed Mr. 1. Lygo as general representative for the East Riding area of Yorkshire. Mr. Lygo has been in the tyre industry for 20 years and for the past nine years has been manager at the company's depot in Sheffield.

Dennis Bros. Ltd., of Guildford, has strengthened its sales engineers team with two new appointments. Mr. L. ,11. (Dick) Holt, based on Watford, will represent the company in the new Greater London area, and Mr. A. D. W. Good is to be sales engineer in the Midland area, working from Stratford-upon-Avon. Mr. Holt joins Dennis Bros. from BR Sales Ltd, and was previously with Scammell Lorries Ltd. for 35 years. Mr. Good was attached to the technical sales department of the Rover Company for 10 years.

Mr. D. J. Sweeting has been appointed sales manager of the garage equipment division of Kerry's (Great Britain) Ltd. and distributing subsidiaries, and Mr. R. E. Ricketts as assistant sales manager. Mr. Sweeting takes over from Mr. D. B. Wright, who has recently been appointed commercial manager of Kerry-Repco Ltd.

Obituary

WE regret to record the death of Mr. T. W. Pell.

Mr. Pell, who was secretary of the Nottingham District Hauliers' Association, has died at the age of 61. He was a chartered accountant in practice at Newstead Grove, Nottingham. and a vicepresident of Nottingham Forest Football Club.
