PUBLIC interest was stressed by Mr. Russell Gurney, Yorkshire Deputy Licensing Authority, at Hull, last

Friday, when granted a firm of hauliers permission to acquire an additional 24-ton vehicle.

'Mr. J, W. McMaster, in evidence for Messrs. J. B. McMaster and Son, Bessie Road, Hull, said they had five vehicles,. which were in use for nearly 24 hours a day, The firm's 10 drivers were ern played to the legal, limit of 11 hours daily, and Mr. McMaster himself Was working from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. The additional vehicle was required on account of increasing trade.

Mr. Gurney said that he was impressed by letters written by three wellknown HUH concerns in support of the application." He did not think it was in the public interest that employers and their drivers should have to work at such high pressure.

For the L.N.E. Railway Co., Mr. Boothroyd submitted that the applicants' increased business did not entitle them to an additional vehicle, that the difficulty in hiring was not so great as had been represented, and that, in any case, a vehicle of less than 24 tons would be sufficient.

• In granting the . application, the Deputy Licensing Authority said, that there had been a general expansion of industry in the 'district, and he was satisfied that the business of one of the concerns which engaged the applicants had substantially increased.

' It might 'be, Mr. Gurney. continued, that Mr. Boothroyd's opposition, on a purely mathematical basis, as to the percentage of 'increased trade required to entitle the applicants to the requested additional tonnage, could be justified. The expansion in the applicants' business would, however, have been greater if they could have :accepted all the

business -Offered to them. .
