SIR JOHN MAXWELL, C.M.G., chairman of the Northern Traffic Commissioners, and Lady Maxwell are having a holiday tour on the Continent. They are spending Christmas in the South of France. They will be back in the north early in the New Year.

He is an engineering inspector in the roads department of the Ministry. MR. ROBERT WATSON, accountant and chief clerk to the City of Edinburgh Transport Department, retires from active transport life on December 31, after 40 years' experience in. the industry. He will, however, continue to act as honorary secretary and treasurer of the Scottish Road Passenger Transport Association, and his address will be 2, St. James's Square, Edinburgh, 1.

MR. HUBERT G. STARLEY has been appointed sales manager of the Champion Sparking Plug Co., Ltd., in England. MR. G. P. Ilasnwns, for 14 years associated with the Champion concern in Lancashire, becomes assistant sales manager. Mr. Starley has had a widely varied career, which has taken him to Alaska, the tropical regions of the Pacific coast and to California.

MR. R. P. ROCHE has been appointed manager of the Newcastle-on-Tyne branch of the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd. Mr. Roche has already had considerable experience on the selling side of this concern, having represented it in the East Riding of Yorkshire for several years, and prior to his present appointment he held an important position on the commercial-tyresales side in the West of England.
