Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Health & Safety Executive has warned hauliers not to ignore safety advice following a near-fatal accident in which a truck tyre exploded in the face of a Bristol operator. William Smart was admitted to Bristol Infirmary Intensive Care Unit having suffered serious head injuries in the blast.

His wife Jane says Smart has carried out many wheel changes in the past without incident. The HSE has launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion, but says tyres should not be removed unless totally deflated. They should not be deflated unless firmly secured in a cage.

Richard Edy, director of the National Tyre Distributors Association, advises hauliers to leave tyre servicing to their suppliers: "When you consider the effect of an exploding car tyre is similar to that of a hand grenade, the blast from a truck tyre would be horrific," he says.
