• The Government is poised to hack down on plans to scrap grandfather rights under the new European eyesight laws after agreeing to delay its introduction for six months.

Transport Secretary Sir George Young is expected to announce the reprieve, buying the Department of Transport time to look at how other European countries are implementing the directive on eyesight tests for drivers.

The tough new rules were due to come into force from 1 July.

The United Road Transport Union has told Transport Minister Steven Norris that Ireland, Finland and Germany plan to keep grandfather rights; Holland, Belgium and France are expected to follow suit.

U RTu general-secretary David Higginbottom says: "We believe grandfather rights will now be kept."
