Arthur Smith, 42, who has been appointed managing director of Midlands BRS (CM April 18), joined the company in 1973 as head of contracts. He became controller of BRS Truck Rental in July last year where he was responsible for the multi-million pound introduction of the rental division in UK. Mr Smith succeeds K.H.H. Cook who has been made managing director and chief executive of NFC in Tehran, Iran. Before joining the BRS Group, Mr Smith was managing director, United Services Transport (Hertz Truck rental). Glyn Samuels, formerly md of A. M. Walker Ltd of Cosby, Leicester, has been appointed md of Flowers Transport of York in succession to J. Bridge, son of the founder, who has resigned to concentrate on his other business interests. Mr Samuels will be responsible for the operation of 120 vehicles and 300,000sqft of warehousing with depots at Newcastle, Halifax, Stockton-on-Tees, Newark and Mansfield, where he will also be responsible for Newark Haulage. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport, he is also vice-chairman of the Transport Association. He remains on the board of A. M. Walker. He has been succeeded as md by Keith Currie, who was previously the commercial manager. Flowers Transport was acquired by Transport Development Group four years ago.

K. J. Osborne, 24, becomes manager of the Winchester branch of Pickfords Removals; he has been controlling the branch on a !temporary basis during the illness of manager G. D. Lacey, whose health has necessitated his retirement. K. F. Maystre, 27, manager

of Scunthorpe, moves to Hull; P. T. Yarnton, 28, Hereford, moves to Worcester; and Chatham chief clerk B. R. Jones, 29, becomes Tunbridge Wells manager.

Obituary

We record with regret the death of Mrs Mary Foden.

Mrs Foden, 82, was the widow of Mr E. R. Foden, founder of ERF, and mother of Mr E. P. Foden, the company's present chairman and managing director.
