DESPITE the sustained opposition of a brother, Mr. H. Walling, Strickland Tenement, Crosthwaite, Kendal, was last week allowed by Mr. I. A. T. Hanlon, Northern Licensing Authority, to transfer a livestock container vehicle from C to 13 licence.

Following representations by 11 objectors, the vehicle was limited to the carriage of livestock and goods, as required, for farmers living within a five-mile radius of Strickland Tenement. . Mr. Walling originally sought a six-mile radius of the parishes of.Crosthwaite and Lyth. The only objector who did not modify his opposition on these terms was the applicant's brother, Mr. T. M. Hearing of the application began on January 30 (The Commercial Motor, February 7).

Mr. T. M. Walling told the Licensing Authority that the business was started by their father, but now he and his brother were in opposition. He objected to the application because of the possibility of competition with his A-licence business. His brother would be able to travel all over the country while his own vehicle was standing idle. He said he had not brought figures to show idle time, Earlier, Mr. W. S. -Hodgson, an auctioneer at Kendal Auction Mart, who supported the applicant at the original hearing, was recalled and asked whether

there was as great a need for more vehicles as there was before.

Mr. Hodgson replied that the need was still acute. A fortnight previously, when given a commission to buy sheep and send them by road to Northampton, he tried in vain from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. to secure a vehicle from a local haulier, and then had to engage a Carlisle operator. The load cost £8 more than it should have done. Since January, 250 more animals had passeC:1 through the auction mart than in the corresponding period of last year.

Two objectors, Mr. A. E. Nelson, of Barnes and Nelson, and Mr. John Cottam both said they were not opposed to the grant of an additional vehicle, but to the proposed area of operation. They thought that Kendal Auction Mart could well be covered by the existing hauliers, except at the peak periods in September, October and November.

Mr. Hanlon granted the application on the agreed terms.
