CBI survey reveals pressure on manufacturers is easing

PRESSURE ON MANUFACTURERS is starting to ease, and there is less despondency about falling orders and output, according to the Confederation of British Industry's latest Industrial Trends Survey.

Some 32% of manufacturers still expect output to fall over the next three months, but 27% anticipate an increase, which is the least negative response since June 2008.

Demand, though, is still weak, with more than half the respondents saying order books are below normal for the seventh consecutive month. The CBI survey showed mediumsized firms predicting a return to growth in the next quarter due to improving export levels.
