• Schmitz Cargobull's latest Rotos low-maintenance trailer running gear combines Sauer axles, Knorr disc brakes, SKF bearings ond Wabco electronic braking expertise with Hendrickson air suspension and its own disc-braked axles. The maintenance-free bearing set-up is said to be good for a C1million km or six years' use, and the Knorr brake pads are designed to last for up to 500,000km. Sauer's axles are also lighter than their predecessors. Schmitz built more than 16,000 trailers last year; 20% had disc brakes which push up the unit cost by £1,400. This year the company is on target to build 18,000 semis, and with a seven-month waiting list output is expected to grow by another 12.5% next year.

Lawdale's loss

• The licence held by Kinrossbased Lawdale was revoked when the company failed to appear at an Edinburgh disciplinary inquiry.

Authorisation cut

• Scottish TC Michael Betts has cut the licence held by McPherson Contracts of Lochgelly from five vehicles and two trailers to two vehicles and two trailers following maintenance problems.

• County Down lorry driver John Begley was sentenced to 90 hours' community service after pleading guilty at Warwick Crown Court to attempting to pervert the course of justice by destroying a tachograph chart.
