Take to the airwaves

THE LATEST in solid-state electronic techniques are said to be incorporated in a new generation of portable radio telephones, the Diamond BE600 range from Burndept Dymar. With a wide range of options the units meet Home Office specifications for police use.

Both UHF and VHF versions are available and they measure 70mm wide x 25mm deep (2.75in x 1in), and weigh 450g (2 lb). The sets incorporate a compact helical antenna, and are available in single or sixchannel versions with a range of tone options.

The radio-telephones, says Burndept, are approved to Home Office specification MPT 1301/1303, and can be used for communication between two units or between one unit and a base station. Frequency range is 136-174MHz for the VHF version and 420-470MHz for the UHF model.

A built-in microphone/ loudspeaker is provided for handheld or chest-harness operation, and a remote microphone/loudspeaker can be used when the set is worn on the belt.

Up to eight hours' continuous use, it is claimed, at normal duty-cycle rates is obtained from two rechargeable nickelcadmium batteries.

New Spedec fasteners

COMMERCIAL VEHICLE bodybuilders using the new Spedec fastening system can save up to 40 per cent, according to sole UK agent Wurth UK, when fastening wooden boards directly to steel structures.

Manufactured by SFS Stadler AG of Switzerland in collaboration with leading truck and trailer companies, the Spedec screw system has been designed and developed for securing wooden floor boards to the steel supporting members of commercial vehicles and containers.

The Spedec screw incorporates two diametrically opposed wings which enlarge the hole in the board as the screw is driven through. These wings shear off as the screw point, accurately centred, penetrates the steel member without separating the two materials.

To ensure maximum holding power, the screw threads have been engineered to match the strength and thickness of the support structure and provide good resistance against vibration.

The Spedec screw is available in sizes from 4.2mm (0.16in) 6.3mm (0.24in) with a variety of countersunk heads to suit the characteristics of the wood. Screw diameters from 4.2mm (0.16in) to 6.3mm (0.24in) in lengths up to 38mm (1.49in) embody Phillips head recesses and are designated SCN. 'Diameters 5.5mm (0.211n) and 6.3mm (0.24in) in lengths from 45mm (1.77in) to 70mm (2.75in) have hexagonal recesses for high-torque transmission and are designated type SC.

Capable of being driven home with conventional air-operated or electric screwdrivers with appropriate bits, SFS Stadler has produced its own driving tool allowing the operator to install each screw by inserting it through a feeder tube thus avoiding unnecessary bending over the work.
