Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DOBBS International, airline caterer, has added an Edbro hilift equipped MAN 10.136 to its fleet of Ford 16-tonners. The vehicle will be used to service aircraft ranging in size from 707s to 747 Jumbos at Heathrow Airport.

Tony Birth, Dobbs' director and general manager, told CM that the decision to move away from 16-tonners was taken because the maximum payload carrying capacity required was only 2 tonnes.

Weight reduction

The weight reduction in Edbro's latest hydraulic scissor lift equipment allowed that to be obtained on a 10 tonne gvw vehicle.

Edbro has saved about 500kg (9.8cwt) on its scissor-lift mainly by increasing the hydraulic working pressures so that smaller hydraulic cylinders could be used for any given load.

Earlier Edbro scissor lifts had a maximum working pressure of 2,000psi whereas the Dobbs' equipment's maximum working pressure is 3,000psi.

No 16-tonner?

Mr Birth said that, together with MAN-VW and Edbro, he examined the possibility of using a 7.5-tonner to reduce his running costs still further but he could not quite achieve the required payload on the lighter vehicle. "However, depending on the results of our evaluation of the 10.136, perhaps we shall not require a 16-tonner again," he said.

The 6,045mmx2,310mm (10ft 10inx7ft 7in) Edbro grp body with fixed loading bridge can be raised up to 5.5m (18ft) from ground level. The 10.136's wheelbase is 4.6m (15ft lin).
