An Essex operator and two drivers are facing

possible jail sentences after being sent to Chelmsford Crown Court for sentencing, having admitted falsifying tachograph records, Brian Martin, trading as Fastbeach and FB Transport, of Benfleet, admitted causing drivers to falsify tachograph records and permitting drivers to drive without the appropriate driving licences and to take insufficient rest and breaks, when he appeared before the Harlow Magistrates. Keith Champion, of Shoeburyness, pleaded guilty to 16 offences of falsification and asked for 32 others to be taken into account. Brian Hoiden, of Eastwood, pleaded guilty to one offence of falsification and two of taking Insufficient rest. Prosecuting for the Vehicle Inspectorate, Anthony Ostrin said that a number of tachograph charts had been falsified with false names. Furthermore, Martin had permitted drivers to make false records. For Martin and the drivers, Jeremy Fear said that it was not a case of excess profit being made. There was no suggestion of inserting switches or pulling out wires.

In committing the three men to the Crown Court for sentence the magistrates indicated that the offences were so serious that their powers of punishment were insufficient Two other of Martin's drivers also admitted a number of drivers' hours offences. Robert Warman. of Westcliff on Sea, pleaded guilty to three offences of driving for more than 4.5 hours without the required break and one of taking insufficient daily rest.

lie was fined £280 and ordered to pay ITO prosecution costs. Andrew Torrance, of Rayleigh, pleaded guilty to two offences of insufficient daily rest and one of falling to make entries on a tachograph record. He was fined £300 and ordered to pay 1150 costs.
