Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

limit upsets motorists more than anything and, in my opinion, it should be lifted to 50mph on Aroads, but some of the single-track roads I drive on are not even suitable to do 40 on! Dual carriageway limits could easily be lifted to 56 with no decrease in road safety in my opinion."

• Steve, Eastbourne: "I think we all know a road where a 40mph limit can cause other motorists to take risks in order to overtake. As to whether or not it would be advisable to increase these limits, I think that the only sensible approach would be for each stretch of road to be inspected before a decision was made to increase the speed limit."

• Anon: "I travel on a 40mph road though Shropshire every night and stick to the limit, as do most of our other drivers. Neither car nor wagon drivers worry about crossing double white lines

to get past, occasionally with various forms of abuse.

"The stretch of road is a well-known accident blackspot and speed cameras are set up regularly—with warning signs—but the lunatics don't seem to be put off. I get a big queue behind me but the extra time taken is minimal—I know because I used to exceed 40 myself, till I came to my senses and thought how unprofessionally I was driving. So, keep it at 40 and be safe. We will never convince a certain type of driver of this so there is no point bothering about them."
